Why Use A Dutch Oven?
I used to use a crockpot but I really missed the crispy skin, so I switched over to a dutch oven and it made all the difference!
Ingredients For Dutch Oven Chicken
- Whole chicken
- Garlic cloves
- Yellow onions
- Butter
- Rosemary
- Kettle & Fire Chicken Stock
- Salt, Pepper, Garlic powder, Onion powder, Paprika
How To Make Chicken In A Dutch Oven
While the oven is preheating to 350℉, take the giblets out of the chicken, rinse in a stainless steel colander (for easy cleaning and sanitizing), and then pat dry. Next, place half a stick of butter inside the cavity and season the skin generously with your seasonings. Pour 1 carton of Kettle & Fire chicken stock into the dutch oven, place whole chicken inside, then quarter your onions and place around the chicken along with 4-5 garlic cloves. Top with fresh/dried rosemary and then place into preheated oven.
- Once you have secured the lid of the dutch oven, place into oven and cook for about 40 minutes (smaller chicken will be around 40 minutes and bigger chicken will take 60 minutes or more)
- Once timer goes off, the key is to baste the top of the chicken with the liquid at the bottom
- Now increase the oven temperature to 425℉ and place back into the oven with the lid off for an additional 20-30 minutes (or until the internal temperature is at least 165℉ in the breast and thigh areas)
What To Do With A Dutch Oven Whole Chicken
- Serve whole alongside mashed potatoes, gravy from the drippings, and roasted carrots
- Cut chicken into sections and serve with rice, gravy from the drippings, and roasted brussel sprouts
- Shred the chicken and make multiple meals out of it like chicken salad on sourdough/crackers, shredded chicken wrap, or to put on top of a salad
- Use the liquid at the bottom and the bones to make bone broth
- Shred the chicken and make a chicken pot pie
- Shred the chicken and place into a gravy made with the drippings and serve over einkorn biscuits
